TOWER OF SAN SATURNINO

San Saturnino tower, zoom

Its ruinous remains, showing three of its sides, reveal the ashlar masonry and features of a construction. This tower has been attribued by some scholars to the perios of Gel mírez (1100-1140), renowned custodian of the Galician coast and precursor of the Hispanic Navy. Nevertheless it is not less probable that the tower comes originally from the times of "Sotomayor" family, who hold the lorship over Santo Tomé, by order of the Archibishop.

Its location in a small barren island at the end of the coast suggests that it must have been conditional by the emplacement of precedent constructions. This tover was an essential landmark, watchover and bastion at this part of the firth.

The romance shape -nowadays adhered to the tower- of the name of the first bishop of Tolosa, whose religions cult was strongly introduce in Spain at the late 4th century, evidences the antiquity of the hermitage which was devoted to his workship, close to the original fortified tower.
